😊 What the World Happiness Report Reveals About Trust, Information, and Well-Being
Insights from the latest World Happiness Report (an annual global assessment of well-being powered by Gallup polling and international research) show that happiness is not just about income or individual success - it is strongly influenced by trust, social connection, and the quality of our relationships.
One consistent finding across countries is that people report higher well-being when they feel they can trust others and when they are part of communities that encourage cooperation and mutual support.
At the same time, environments where trust is eroded - whether through social fragmentation or unreliable information - tend to correlate with lower overall life satisfaction.
The Better Take:
When people are repeatedly exposed to misinformation, biased narratives, or low-quality content without the tools to evaluate it, it can weaken trust - not only in institutions, but also in each other. But with the right tools and education, individuals can learn to question sources, recognize bias, and make more informed judgments.
📈 At Getting Better Foundation, this is the problem we are working to address.
We are a UNESCO and Walter Cronkite Excellence in Journalism award-winning non-profit organization whose mission is to advance media and information literacy in homes, schools, and communities worldwide.
We produce practical media literacy tools and run workshops that help educators integrate critical thinking into everyday teaching, whether in English, Math, Biology, Civics, and Social Studies. The goal is simple: equip students to better understand information, recognize bias, and make informed judgments.
Our Walter Cronkite award-winning film, “Trust Me”, has been licensed by leading universities and high schools and premiered at a U.S. State Department global media literacy conference. It is used as a teaching tool to spark conversations about credibility, truth, and how information shapes perception.
At a time when both trust in information and trust in each other are increasingly important to societal well-being, strengthening media literacy is one practical way to support more informed, connected communities.
