AI is evolving from being the shiny new toy to something young people will have to navigate at school, at work, and all over the internet. The good news is that the evidence points to a useful response that is less dramatic than either “AI will save everything” or “AI will ruin everything”: teach people how to use it, question it, and know when not to use it. As Rosemary Smith, Managing Director of the Getting Better Foundation, puts it:
“If we don't teach AI in schools, who will teach our kids how to use it responsibly, with trust and integrity? I call this AI with AI — Artificial Intelligence with Academic Integrity.”
It’s a simple idea with a big implication: AI literacy isn’t just about learning how to use a new technology; it’s about learning how to use it responsibly.

😬 Young People Are Looking at AI and Seeing a Job Interview
Young Americans are not exactly lining up to give AI a standing ovation. Pew Research Center found that 55% of adults ages 18 to 29 now say they are more concerned than excited about AI, up from 31% in 2021. Even more striking, 73% of under-30s think AI will lead to fewer jobs in the U.S. over the next 20 years, up from 61% in 2024.
That does not prove AI will eliminate jobs. It shows something different and important: people entering adulthood are expecting disruption and are increasingly skeptical about where they fit into it. The perception of AI is therefore becoming part of the economic story itself. Rather than simply teaching young people how to operate AI tools, education has an opportunity to teach them how to adapt, evaluate claims about automation, and develop skills that complement technology.
The Better Take:
Understanding what AI can and cannot replace is more useful than guessing whether it will “take all the jobs.” Good AI literacy can turn uncertainty into preparedness, giving young people a better basis for choosing skills, careers, and ways of working.
✍️ The Internet Is Getting a New Author, and It Is Very Busy
Pew’s analysis of 490,000 English-language webpages found that 10% of webpages in its July 2026 sample showed significant signs of AI authorship. Among pages published after ChatGPT launched, the figure rose to more than one-third. The pattern is also uneven: about 1 in 10 .com pages showed signs of AI authorship, compared with 4.6% of .org pages and roughly 1% of .edu and .gov pages.
That does not mean 1 in 10 webpages is entirely machine-written, nor does an AI detector provide a perfect verdict on an individual page. Pew explicitly notes that detection tools can misclassify human writing and AI-generated writing. The larger signal is the direction of travel: AI-assisted content is becoming a meaningful part of the information environment, making source checking, context, authorship and evidence increasingly important.
The Better Take:
The advantage of AI literacy is not simply spotting “AI writing.” It is learning to slow down before believing polished information. The more effortless content becomes to produce, the more valuable basic source-checking skills become.
🏫 Schools Are Discovering That Banning AI Is Not the Same as Teaching It
AP reports that a growing number of U.S. schools are moving from simply restricting AI toward teaching students how the technology fails. In Charleston, South Carolina, educators used an AI-generated world map filled with obvious errors to demonstrate why confident-looking answers still need verification. The district is training middle and high school students and teachers in AI basics, hallucinations, bias, ethics and data privacy.
That approach reflects a broader shift in education. Thirty-seven U.S. states have published official AI guidance for schools, while the OECD and European Commission have developed an AI literacy framework for primary and secondary education that emphasizes understanding AI, critically evaluating its outputs, and using it responsibly and creatively. The emerging lesson is that literacy means more than writing clever prompts. Sometimes the most important AI skill is knowing when not to trust the answer.
The Better Take:
Students gain something more durable than a list of AI tools when they learn how systems fail, how to verify information and how to protect their data. The goal is not to make children afraid of AI or dependent on it. It is to help them become capable users who can think for themselves.
